History of School

The Postgraduate School of the University was established in 1989/1990 academic session, it is headed by a Dean who should be a Professor.  Administratively, Postgraduate School is managed by the Dean actively supported by the Deputy Dean and the Secretary who should attained the rank of a Deputy Registrar.

The Postgraduate School has grown in strength over time and has registered International recognitions and linkages and became Centre of excellence in the following areas:

  • Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Step-B Funded Centre of Excellence)
  • Centre for Human Settlement and Urban development (CHSUD) in Collaboration with UN- Habitat.
  • West African Science Services Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL)
  • African Centre of Excellence (ACE) for Mycotoxin and Food Safety etc.

In the area of domestic and foreign linkages and collaboration, the Management of the University created the Directorate of Collaboration Affiliation and Linkage (DCAL) to cater for the important function of networking.

The University has established a linkage programme with the University of Namibia and the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.  The University has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), Nigeria.  It is also a member of the Association of African Universities.

The University has honoured the following Distinguished personalities:  Alhaji (Dr.) Shehu Idris, CFR, the Emir of Zazzau: Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Dasuki, CFR, the former Sultan of Sokoto, late Alhaji (Dr.) Abdulrahman Mora; Dr. Sam Nujoma, the former President of the Republic of Namibia; General Ibrahim Badamasi Babagida (rtd) the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings (rtd), the former President of the Federal of Ghana; Prof. Jonathan Othman Ndagi, pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University and Mr. Raphael O. A. Shonekan, the pioneer Principal, Federal School of Medical Laboratory Technology, National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom.  Others include, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the former Executive Governor of Osun State; Dr. Abubakar Olusola saraki, the Waziri of Ilorin; Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu the Sardauna of Minna, Mr. Alioune Badiane of the UN Habitat, Nairobi Kenya; Admiral (Dr.) Murtala Nyako, (Rtd) the former Executive Governor of Adamawa State and Dr. Aliyu Mu’azu Babangida (Talban Minna), the former Executive Governor of Niger State, Alh. (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar, GCFR, the etsu Nupe and Chairman Council of Traditional Rulers, Niger State and Emir of Gombe.

In recognition of excellence in areas of Science and Technology, the University has been attracting high caliber and eminent scholars to its fold.

OFFICE OF THE DEAN

The pioneer Dean of the School was late Prof. D. O. Adefolalu.  The School has been headed by six other Deans in the following succession: late Prof. J. O. Adeniyi, late Prof. J. A. Abalaka, Prof. S. L. Lamai, Prof. Mrs. S. N. Zubairu, Prof. M. G. M. Kolo and Engr. Prof. Salawu Sadiku.

The present Dean, Engr. Prof. O. K. Abubakre was the former Dean, School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology.  He took over from Engr. Professor Salawu Sadiku upon his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of the Kogi State University of Science and Technology, Osara on 1st February, 2020.

Professor Oladiran Kamardeen Abubakre is an accomplished Engineer and a Professor of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering with over 32 years’ experience in Lecturing, Research, Community service and University Administration. He obtained M.Sc. in Mechanical Metallurgy from Donetsk National Technical University, Ukrain and a PhD in Materials Engineering from Federal University of Technology, Minna. His research interest covers Development of New Engineering Materials from local raw materials; Development of Ferroalloys from locally sourced ores, Development of Metal Matrix and Polymer Matrix Composites. Nanomaterial application in Energy and Water purification, Nanocoating and Nanocomposites. He has been engaged in research and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students and has graduated 10 PhD candidates and numerous Master degree holders. He has attracted Institutional based Research Grant and National Research Fund from TETFund, and other grants from Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel and World Bank to the University. He has with 2 National Patents and over 80 Publications in reputable National and International Journals. He successfully managed a Multimillion Dollars World Bank Project (Step-B) culminating in the establishment of Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (CGEB) in the Federal University of Technology, Minna.  He has served at various times as Head of Department; Deputy Dean, School of Engineering and Engineering Technology; Deputy Dean, Postgraduate School; Dean, School of Engineering and Engineering Technology; Dean, School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology. He served the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Minna Branch in various capacities since 2000 and became the Branch Chairman in 2010. He was a member of the National Council of NSE from 2010 – 2012. He was the National Technical Secretary of Mining, Material and Metallurgical Division of NSE and Auditor to Nigerian Metallurgical Society at various times. He is an Internationally Certified Entrepreneurship (CEFE) Trainer, a Coach and a National Advisor to CEFE International. He has served as Resource Person for NUC and COREN on accreditation exercise to many Universities. He has also served as External Examiner and Assessor of professorial candidates for many Institutions. He is trustworthy, reliable, innovative, and result-oriented with excellent team spirit. He assumed office as the Dean, Postgraduate School, Federal University of Technology, Minna in February, 2021.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities attached to the office of the Dean, Postgraduate School include the following:

  1. The Dean shall chair the Postgraduate School Board in the discharge of the Board’s responsibilities.
  2. The Dean is responsible to the day to day running of the Postgraduate School including but  not limited to academic, administrative, financial matters of the School.
  3. Organizing and coordinating administration and supervision of examinations of     Postgraduate students including their progress report.
  4. Maintaining the progress of Postgraduate programme and ensuring the sustenance of adequate standards.
  5. Maintaining permanent records of Postgraduate students and liaising with the Registry, Bursary, Library and other units of the University on matters relating to Postgraduate    programmes.
  6. The office is also responsible for all publications covering the Postgraduate programmes that is prospectus, annual reports and the report of Postgraduate work including titles and        abstracts of thesis/dissertation accepted for higher degrees.
  7. Presentation of all Postgraduate students examination result to Senate for approval as may be recommended by the Board.
  8. Presenting graduands for the award of Postgraduate Diploma and higher degrees at           convocation.
